National Competitors
Justin Schwin and Tom Giorgio earned first and second place in the Microsoft Network Administration contest at the National Business Professionals of America competition in Anaheim, California. The competitors were given a 50-question test to complete in only 60 minutes. The test determined the students’ ability to implement, configure, manage, and troubleshoot a number of network situations. -more-

Leading Ladies
Medina County hosts the Spring Leadership Ball recognizing the most outstanding young women in the county for their contributions to their school and community. Five of the 2010 Debutantes attend the Career Center. The accomplished young women are: Nicole Conti, Engineering Technology and Design; Brittany Grayson, Sports Fitness; Samantha Madonia, Automotive Technology; Renee Pawelec, Teacher Education Academy; and Kayla White, Optical Technology. -more-

Car Show & Plant Sale
On May 8, the Medina County Career Center hosted the seventh annual Presidents Council Car Show and Landscape Design’s “Mothers Day” Plant Sale. Over two dozen members of Presidents Council spent months preparing and planning for the event. The students contacted local businesses and individuals to sponsor and donate prizes. They mailed out over 120 personal invitations to former car show participants and organized a “call night” where they contacted potential participants by phone. -more-

Student Inventor
Engineering Technologies and Design program earned second place in an international engineering contest. In the 2009-2010 “Extreme Redesign: The Ultimate 3-D Printing Challenge,” contestants competed to improve a product currently in use or to design a building or piece of art. Robby took a practical approach to the challenge by designing a product that would assist construction crews while working on roofs. Last summer, Robby worked as an assistant on a roofing crew. He said, “When the air compressor’s hose slid across the roof, it would get stuck on shingles and gutters.” Robby named his invention “The Gutter Guide.” -more-

Volunteering for Animals
Students in the Animal Management and Care program gave up a few hours one Saturday to volunteer at the 13th annual Medina County Adopt-A-Thon event. On May 1, over 50 rescue organizations from Medina, Summit, and Wayne counties gathered at the Medina National Guard Armory to educate visitors and find loving homes for rescued animals. Nearly thirty animals became pets during the Adopt-A-Thon. Kyle Grimm, Stephanie Harbaugh, Kaitlin Brewer, and Aimee Wunderle were among the MCCC students volunteering at the event. Kyle Grimm said, “I helped set up the booths and carried in supplies and pets for some of the groups. There were a lot of animals there—everything from skunks to dogs!” -more-

2010 NTHS Inductees
National Technical Honor Society members are among the most outstanding students in their class. Members of NTHS possess the characteristics of scholarship, service, skill, responsibility, honesty, leadership, and citizenship, and demonstrate academic and attendance excellence. -more-

Engineering Competitions: Cardboard Canoes
Four teams of Advanced Physics students at the Medina County Career Center entered the North Coast Tech Prep “Cardboard Canoe Challenge” competition on Friday, May 7. The competition consisted of two parts: the race and the presentation. -more-

Formula One Racers
Students in the Engineering Technologies and Design program applied their knowledge of three-dimensional design to create small-scale cars to race in the National Formula One Technology Challenge. Junior Keely Jordan explains, “We used a 3-D modeling program called Auto Desk Inventor to design the cars. Our designs needed to meet the requirements in the 20-page regulation book. We spent a lot of time researching and designing the car.” Keely is hoping to become a mechanical engineer, someday. -more-
MCCC Soap Box Derby Car
Career Center students applied their knowledge of mathematics and physics by building a race car for the Medina County Soap Box Derby. A student at a local elementary school will race the car at the All-American Soap Box Derby World Champion-ship in Akron on Saturday, July 24, 2010
Blood Drive Success
On May 4, the Medina County Career Center hosted an American Red Cross Blood Drive. The collec-ion goal of 176 pints was exceeded. The blood drive brought in 180 productive pints of blood and 9 double red blood cell donations. Seventy-seven of the pints collected were from first time donors. According to the Red Cross, the MCCC Blood Drive was one of the most successful school blood drives in the county. Career Center students earned $1000 in scholarship funds. Students in the Public Safety and Diversified Medical Technology programs assisted with set up, registration, refreshments, and clean-up after the event.
Eagle Scout Recognition
MCCC student Ryan Paszt celebrated his Eagle Scout Court of Honor with a ceremony at Saint Francis Xavier on May 2. To earn this award, Ryan, a junior in the Commercial Truck and Diesel program, had to fulfill a number of time consuming requirements which proved his dedication to his troop and community. Ryan was required to plan, develop, and lead a service project within his community. For his service project, Ryan worked with and supervised a group of volunteers as they built ten campfire benches for Hidden Hollow Park in Lodi. -more-
